Motivation During Holidays

Every year the same things happen, train hard, make a goal to be in the best shape for the summer break. We train consistently, with a purpose and a commitment. Then, Christmas comes around and we switch off.
Suddenly, all the hard work and passion to be in a great shape has sort off just died off into the distance.... Does that sound familiar?

Motivation During Holidays

Motivation during the holidays, every year the same things happen,

we train hard and make a goal to be in the best shape for the summer break.

We train consistently, with a purpose and a commitment, diet is on point and motivation is there.

Then, Christmas comes around and we switch off and go into a kind of limbo as what to do,

how much to eat, relax and not train but for how long do you push this?

Suddenly, all the hard work and passion to be in a great shape has sort off just died off into the distance.

Does that sound familiar…?

I’ve always said, hey, enjoy the festive season,

relax with family, go on a break, take up a new hobby to get you moving again,

you deserve it for putting in a big year.

Just don’t let it drag on for too long, to the point where you are now feeling sloppy,

bloated from drinking or eating too much or not motivated to get going again,

otherwise this could be a sign you’ve gone overboard with your relaxing.

Few ideas on how to get moving

If you’re planning a trip away with family make sure to pack some training gear.

So for me that would look like this:

  • Pair of runners
  • Shorts
  • Singlet.

I’ve found this works for me, every year I start things off by:

  1. Going for a jog.
  2. If I find somewhere to do some chin ups like a bar to hang off it or a tree branch, I’ll use those.
  3. While I’m there I’ll throw in some push ups.
  4. If there is a hill on the way I will do some hill sprints as well.

do you see what happens once you make that choice just to start moving again…?

It gets you going again in a fun way in a different environment, you’ll get to explore the area from a different perspective.

As I’m writing this blog I’m sore in parts I haven’t been sore for a long time

because it’s not the type of way I normally train during the year,

it’s a little more structured, I don’t do long distance running,

no more than 1km so running 5km has me sore and I love it.

My second run will be the same:

but one or two more hill sprints thrown in at the end

then the third run:

I’ll throw in 50 crunches too.

Then I’ll continue my surfing and kiting and bike riding as this is my hobby it’s what I love doing in my spare time,

I don’t see it as training session even though it sort of is.

If you look at it, I’m always moving outdoors and I will continue to motivate others to do the same as long as I’m alive.

Anyway, what I’m getting at is, don’t let it drag on week after week because there’s no need for it.

Make a decision, pick a time, pick a path and go..!

You will not believe how that first session will make you feel,

how quickly you’ll go from zero motivation during holidays to being switched on from that first easy harmless run.

It only takes once than it flows from then on.

I do this every year, if I’m away on holiday’s I’ll do exactly as I mentioned,

if I’m home I’ll hit a local running track and do either some sprint work or body weight drills

such as burpees, pushups, squat jumps or mountain climbers, something different every time,

work them into sets and reps and go for it.

It’ll get your hormones firing again, your mood elevated and get you confident once again.

Conclusion

Remember this, there is no off season for us,

don’t fall into this trap where you follow the general public’s opinion on when you are either on or off.

This is the way you have to change and then and only then you are living the life you’ve always dreamed off.

So Motivation During Holidays, don’t complicate it , keep it simple and get back into rhythm  !
